Noortje Marres on 24 January 2008: “Devising affectedness: Eco-homes and the making of material publics”
29 January 2008 at 0:29 (Europe/London) in Events, NotesNoortje Marres from Goldsmiths, University of London, discussed how domestic appliances from the recycle bin to a real-time electricity consumption meter can build material engagement in public issues. In her presentation Marres demonstrated how the combination of mass media, material and virtual (e.g. blogging) practices can build civic engagement in common issues that political institutions are not able to solve by themselves.
Marres pointed out, however, that in order to go from a mere material tinkering to issue-oriented engagement in politics different aspects of the hybrid objects need to be present and balanced.
